Government Targets In 2006 the Government proposed to build 3.6 million new homes by the year 2026, which equates to approximately 180,000 new homes This figure was found to be inadequate due to Britain’s rapidly expanding population and in 2009 a new figure of 250,000 was said to be more realistic (Office for National Statistics, March 2009).This brings the total figure for new homes to be built in the UK by 2026 to around 4.25 million. The increase in figures has since resulted in a much higher demand for agricultural land situated close to areas of existing residential development. The answer is simple; they have to be built on Strategic land on the edge of existing towns and settlement areas where infrastucture and aminities are already in place. |
